| | The Artists | | Members of the Art Tribe All of our artists demonstrate fantastic talent and commitment to their work. Many of them also strive to improve their communities with teaching workshops. By teaching others these skills, they create employment and can build their businesses or help others get started. All of these artists and craftsmen can now improve their livelihoods. More self-sufficient families mean less poverty and crime - and the emergence of a safe, equal New South Africa.
Creativity transcends race and creed, so we are proud to offer works from all walks of life. Please read more about our member artists below.

| Proud - Johannesburg Wire Sculptors Proud is a Rastafarian wire artist based in Yeoville, Johnannesburg. We met Proud and his wife at an open air market where his fantastic wire piggy banks caught our eye. Proud is a gentle, soft spoken man with an entrepreneurial spirit and a fantastic ability to realise just about any object in wire and glass beads.
Living and working in the poorer area of Yeoville, Proud is striving to improve the livelihood of his young family and others. He teaches other South Africans how to create wire sculpture, giving them the skills necessary to either start on their own or join his business. As a businessman he understands the quality of his work and charges accordingly. Our purchases are usually accompanied by enthusiastic negotiations and always end in a fair price for both of us.
The sculptures Proud is holding are Bead and Wire Double Basses which we commissioned him to create. We knew he could produce great work but these are nothing short of brilliant - accurate down to the bridge and keys. They weigh in at about 500 grams and use over 3000 beads! | |
| Canaan and Givemore - Johannesburg Wire Sculptors Canaan and Givemore are extremely talented wire sculptors, who are able to help us cope with the demand for our Wire and Bead scultpture. Having three talented wire artists on board is a real bonus for us!
Canaan and Givemore are two brothers who have pooled their resources to not only sell at open air markets across Johnannesburg, but also run a small shop. Specialising in animal wire sculpture they stock pieces ranging from enormous tortoises and elephants, down to delicate glass beaded seahorses. The shop is very well stocked (except after we have made an appearance!) and they enjoy brisk trade. When the duo get chatting, they are extremely proud of their work and will also put up a spirited defence of their prices!
We would like to welcome Canaan and Givemore to the Art Tribe. They are a brilliant example of raw talent mixed with a resourcefulness and energy typical of the New South African entrepreneur. We hope that you enjoy their creative work. |
| Francilla - Cape Candle Artist the Art Tribe are proud to have our Tribal Light African candles created by a wonderfully capable and talented South African artist, Francilla who leads and manages a team of previously disadvantaged women in the rural Western Cape. The women are trained in the art of candle production and the difficult but rewarding skill of candle painting. As is so important when creating jobs and improving the lives of people in Africa, education and empowerment is the key.
As the team grows, team members learn from each other and a true self-help community is born! Whilst exhibiting the true trait of handmade candles in that no two are ever exactly alike - the quality of our Tribal Light candles is second to none:

| It is important that you take good care of your new candle. Get the most from it by following these tips.
Even burning Trim the wick to approximatley quarter-inch before lighting your candle each time. This will allow it to burn more evenly with a flame that is neither too high nor too low. Burn a candle until the pool of melted wax covers the top of the candle (usually one hour per inch of its diameter). This will prevent a hole from burning down the middle of the candle, called "tunneling." Burn candles for no longer than 3-4 hours at a time. Only burn candles in a holder, and never on or near anything that can catch fire.
What's a Snuffer? The best way to extinguish a flame is with a candle snuffer. Candle snuffers eliminate smoke, prevent wax from splattering, and keep the wick centered. Allow candles to cool completely after you extinguish the flame, and before you move or re-light them; melted wax can be hot.
Storing your Candles Store your candles in cool, dry, enclosed area, and they'll burn more slowly. To help prevent color fading, keep candles out of direct sunlight. |
